Natural Dyeing

hosted by High Desert Observatory

Join us for an immersive workshop focused on natural dyeing with native desert plants such as sage, prickly pear cactus, rabbitbrush and olive trees. Workshop participants will learn how to process leaves, flowers and roots harvested from the Two Bunch Palms grounds and neighboring desert gardens into natural fabric dyes. The class will discuss eco-friendly mordanting processes, native plant identification, and how to work with both animal and plant fibers. Students will leave with a collection of dye samples and their own hand dyed silk scarf and cotton bandana.

Bundle Dyeing

hosted by High Desert Observatory

 

In this workshop participants will learn to create botanical prints and patterns on fabric using leaves, flowers, and roots such as marigolds and safflower petals, as well as tree leaves and desert plants harvested from the Two Bunch Palms grounds. This beautiful and experimental process is a wonderful introduction to natural dyeing. Each student will leave with their own hand dyed silk scarf made in class.

Tray & Vessel Workshop

hosted by Concrete Geometric

Create your own tray and vessel out of concrete, pigments, and crystals. Krizia from Concrete Geometric has been creating concrete goods for 8 years. She will demonstrate simple techniques with you to mix and pour your tray and vessel using reusable silicone molds. The pieces can be used around your home to create a small-ware that holds your favorite items from jewelry to crystals, or use the pieces as a meditation altar to hold sage or palo santo.  Pieces will dry quickly and will be ready for pick up 30min after your workshop is over.

Basket Weaving

Learn the craft of basket weaving. This workshop will guide students through introductory basketry techniques using palm fronds gathered from the Two Bunch Palms grounds, reed and sea grass. Each participant will have the opportunity to create their own small woven vessel in class.

Indigo Dyeing

hosted by High Desert Observatory

 

Indigo is an ancient dye material, whose history can be traced around the world. It is a unique and almost alchemical dye, made using a living fermentation process. In this workshop, class participants will be guided through the steps of making an indigo vat, immersion dyeing and traditional Japanese shibori techniques. Each student will have the opportunity to create an indigo dyed silk scarf and cotton bandana in class.
